THE LONG JOURNEY HOME

the problem with an afternoon flight is that there is a lot of waiting around .... i was mostly packed so i had little to do ....

i said my goodbyes to Mark, the Manager at Casa del Sol... it was really nice staying there ... and caught a taxi at 11am to the airport ...

the airport at Roatan is not very large, some of the major airlines just started flying in and out of there ... i imagine they will be enlarging their airport at some point to accommodate the extra traffic ... so, it's pretty busy, and the lines are long ... but since i have 'Priority Status' with my American Airlines Credit Card,  i got to go to the front of the line ... that was pretty sweet  :)

but i had a not-so-nice surprise when i got to Immigration.     it seems the 'yellow piece of paper' that was supposed to be attached to my Passport was missing ... i looked everywhere and searched my brain for where i might have put it.   .... i cannot imagine i would have removed a piece of paper that was stapled to my Passport and thrown it away ... but it was not there ... the only thing i can think of is that when i went to the bank (5times) to get money, i had to take my Passport ... at some point it must have fallen out ... the cost to replace this 'yellow piece of paper' ?????????   .... US$170 !!!   ....the nice girl petitioned the 'man in charge' to take pity on me, and got the fee lowered to US$80 ... still a huge unexpected expense  :(    ...do you suppose they split $60 and gave the $20 to the 'authorities'  ?

i also have TSA PreCheck on my records, so i don't have to take my shoes off going through security screening, .... however, that didn't stop them from doing a 'pat-down'  and scan on me ... and ... took my newly-purchased-water from me before i boarded the plane ... even though i purchased it after i went through security .... ack! ... the hassles of traveling ...

fortunately my flights were uneventful,  ....going through Immigration and Customs in Dallas/FtWorth was uneventful, ... they have a new computerized system for Immigration ... you scan your Passport, answer some questions and you're through ... you never even talk to an Immigration Officer .... this kind of made me sad ... i always feel really good when i return from a trip out of the country and the Immigration Officers says,  'Welcome Home' .... but that doesn't happen anymore   :(

my next flight was into Arkansas at 10pm, to an empty airport ... the plan is to sleep here in the airport until my 6am flight ... i've done this before, in fact, every time ... it's impossible to leave Central America in the afternoon and arrive in Chicago in time to catch the last flight to Kzoo ... so i have to spend the night somewhere .... so i search for a flight that gets in late somewhere, and leaves early the next morning ... so i walked through the airport looking for some comfortable chairs or benches to sleep on .... then i saw these ... aren't they cute ??????? ... this is perfect !
Cute People-Chairs
i got situated with my blanket, just as the Maintenance Guy cleaning the floors asked me if i understood that i 'cannot stay here overnight' .... i know i've done this before; but things change.

long story short ...i could not stay inside the 'secured' area ... i needed to go to the other side and talk to the TSA Officer ... who gave me a cot, a blanket, and a pillow, with a pillow cover ...   so i slept here .......

my alarm clock battery died, so i woke up about every hour, because i was afraid i would miss my flight, and then got up around 3:30am when things started 'happening' in preparation for the first flights ...

my flight into Chicago was uneventful as well ... i had some time to kill, so i visited their Aeroponic Gardens, this is a process similar hydroponics in which the plant's roots are misted with water    ...the lettuce and other vegetables grown are served at airport restaurants ... it's impressive ....

if you find yourself with time in Chicago airport, check it out ... they also have very nice quiet tech stations set up, and a yoga/meditation room available ...

my wonderful sister picked me up in Kzoo and took me to lunch and then home ... where i tackled the chore of cleaning up the limbs, branches, and twigs still in my yard from the December Ice Storm ....  :(

i'm home, safely, from my 2014 Winter Adventure, so ... this is my last post, and i agree, it's pretty boring .... sorry ... :(

thank you all for your notes and emails while i was gone .... it means a lot to me to get them ... and helps to keep me 'connected' to you all ...

until next time ... stay happy and healthy !

25 Apr, Fri -- Afternoon

AFTERNOON:  SANDY BAY

i got in touch with Katie who was ready, and we took a taxi to Sandy Bay ... it was strange weather .... and the water was bathtub-calm ... very unusual !  ...
i didn't realize Katie is so tall ... or i'm so short until i saw this photograph  :(
the Super Snorkelers

we headed through the grasses in the shallows towards the reef ... and saw some beautiful Cushion Sea Stars   :)
Cushion Sea Stars

then Katie spotted this Moray Eel ... i've looked on line for this eel, and i don't have 'the' reference book ...... but i'm calling it a PurpleMouth Moray Eel ... i've never even heard of this eel, much less seen one ... whoo hooo ... a new one to add to my 'list'  :)

Katie took a couple photos of me snorkeling  :)
Donna Duck-Dives

i need to buy a new mask that is more 'flattering' ....
Snorkeling

we snorkeled outside the reef ... i kept feeling little needle pricks on my skin ... i asked Katie if she was getting stung by JellyFish .... she said she was not ... but eventually she felt them too ... we got back inside the reef where they weren't so bad ... it was irritating, but neither of us had any marks on us ...

i took some photos of some of the fishes we saw ...
Queen AngelFish
fishes look so funny seen full-face-forward .... :)

this little coral reef was alive with all kinds of small fishes ...

i tried to get a good photos of this Juvenile Banded ButterflyFish ... but he was too fast for me ..... :(

this Juvenile Four-Eye Butterfly Fish was more accommodating ...

and you may remember all the 'fuss' i made over a RedLip Blenny when i was in Utila :)

Cleaner Fish and Anemone

we started to head towards shore and passed over a lot of sand patches and found this Hermit Crab in a Conch Shell ...

and this Sea Biscuit, which is a type of a Sand Dollar, but oblong shaped and 'fatter' ....you can see that it is/was moving through the sand eating ... slowly, very slowly ...
Sea Biscuit

and of course, lots of Cushion Sea Stars ... they are so big and colorful and mysterious ...

then i saw this old Conch shell with an Anemone living inside it .... when i went down to get a closer look, ... i saw this little Juvenile DrumFish, on the left...

and then noticed the tiny red crab inside the Anemone ... i almost missed that one ....

Katie had to go in and check on something, so i stayed out a little while longer ...

Healthy Coral

this is a Sea Cucumber called a Tiger Tail ... for obvious reasons .... most Sea Cucumbers are snort and thick .... this one is long and skinny ... but if you touch it ... it shrinks up really short ... i did not do that ... so he's still skinny ....

we got a ride back home with a friend of Katie's ...
later, i met the Marine Park Staff at the SunDowner to say farewell ...

Giaco is the RMP Exec Director; ...Veronica is a Volunteer from the capital city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras and is leaving tomorrow also; ...Christi is Director of Community Development ...
Giaco, Veronica, Christi
Nic is Director of Communications and Marine Infrastructure; ...Caroline is his partner; ...Heather is doing a study on Roatan, i met her the first time i volunteered here 4 yrs ago; ...and Marta is the RMP Administrator ...
Nic, Caroline, Heather, Marta
Veronica, Christi, Me
so that's the group, except for Tasha, the Eco-Store Manager, who i didn't get to say my final goodbye to   :(

when i got back home i started organizing and packing.   ... it was wonderful to be able to stay in one place for 7 weeks, a place to call home where i could put my things in a 'place' where i could find them ... the downside is that my 'things in a place' were everywhere! .... i was up until 1am, i didn't want to leave this to do in the morning ....

25 Apr, Fri -- Morning

FINAL FUN-FILLED DAY ON ROATAN

my last day on Roatan, .... my last day of my 2014 Adventure, ... my last day of warm sunshine, ... my last day of beautiful views of turquoise water, .... my last day of snorkeling,      ...yes, i am sad about leaving  :(

MORNING:  FRENCH CAY
note:  sometimes it's 'caye', sometimes it's 'cay', sometimes it's 'key' ... it has to do with the language of the people doing the 'naming'  :)
Christi had previously told me about 'French Cay' and i asked if it would be possible for me to go snorkeling there ... this was my 'treat/perk' for volunteering.    she picked me up at 7:30 and took me there  ...

it's a small community on the east/south side of the island ... it is not a legally 'protected' area, although they have applied for that designation... however, this little community has decided to 'protect' it themselves .... it's a beautiful little lagoon with crystal clear waters, that reminded me of Glovers Reef in Belize ...
Lagoon at French Cay

the business is called Roatan Ocean Adventures, and they offer guided snorkel tours for the Cruise Ship people ... today, i was invited to accompany them on their tour with a family with 3 small children.... i know what you are probably thinking ... me and 3 small children :) ... and i have to admit i was a little concerned, especially after yesterday's dive :( .... but only the 2 little girls (4-6?) snorkeled, and they did very well ... their father was with them and very vigilant ...

they have the most and largest lobsters of anywhere I snorkeled .... our guide, Herbert showed us lots of lobsters, of which he was very proud, as he should be ....
Spiny Reef Lobster

but i was more interested in the fishes   :)

Herbert not only patrols this area from a boat, but he also 'patrols' it underwater snorkeling ... so he knows exactly where everyone (fishes) lives and can quickly take you there, .... like the location of 'special' hard to find fishes, like this Bridled BurrFish  ... i've never seen one of these before ... so, now i've seen the BalloonFish, the Web BurrFish, and the Bridled BurrFish ... they all look very similar, but are all different  ... and i love them all ... HUGE eyes, cute little smiley mouth, spines, and all have the ability to 'inflate' themselves ...  the PorcupineFish is also a member of this 'family' but is longer and larger ...
the Bridled BurrFish  ...

and this is what it looked like after snorkel fins kicked up a lot of sand .... he was covered in sand :( .... looked like it has snowed ...

here are photos of the other 2 BurrFishes for comparison ..

here are some of the other fishes i saw ...
Graysby ? ... usually they have black spots, not white ?

you have seen so many photos of these fishes, i don't need to tell you what they are  :)

i've not seen this fish before, but love it's coloring .... i'm guessing it's a Juvenile Wrasse of some sort ... maybe YellowHead Wrasse? ....

a new Sea Cucumber for me ... a Furry Sea Cucumber ... i like seeing new things :)

this SharpNose PufferFish is all colorful in blues for the mating season ...

compare to the photo i took in March ...no blue ...

although Herbert pointed out this Lobster ... i was more interested in the tiny Juvenile DrumFish that was sharing this space ....
Lobster and Juvenile Drum Fish

we did a quick tour on the outside of the reef ...also very clear waters  ....
Outside the Reef at the Wall

I am very impressed with the 'story' about this area and the fact that some of the residents have taken it upon themselves to patrol and protect the beautiful reef and it's inhabitants. They have seen the decline in numbers of lobsters and fish, and are doing what they can to prevent it from happening here ..... it is a heroic effort and much appreciated ..
it's a very nice little business they have and i was very appreciative of the opportunity to be able to enjoy the morning with them ...

after snorkeling, they took me to the 'shopping center' where i was able to catch a taxi home ... i asked the taxi to stop along the way at the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum ... in addition to the tropical fruit orchards and flower gardens, it is the Caribbean's only commercial hydroponic lettuce and herb farm,  .....it sounded like a great tour, but it would have taken a couple hours; .... and i really just wanted to do another snorkel on my last day :)   ... priorities ... it would be a nice thing to do on one of those rainy days .... next time ...

continued .....
