Siquijor Island Arrival

FINALLY, making my way to the Island of Siquijor.   This traveling to other islands is about 3 weeks later than planned due to un-cooperative weather patterns.

Siquijor Island is another island that was highly recommended for diving and snorkeling right outside your door.    I started researching places to stay and worked on that for several days.   It was very frustrating, part of it was the lack of, or slow internet, and the other part was the non-existant contact emails and then un-responsiveness of the resorts to my inquiry.   Then the answers finally came back ‘fully booked’.

Something to consider when traveling to this part of the world …. CHINESE NEW YEAR ! ... a huge celebration that starts the end of January and goes for 10-15 days or a month depending on who you talk to.    i know from traveling in Latin America to avoid Semana Santa (Easter Week) … but this one hit me by surprise.    i think the entire country of China travels to the Philippines for Holiday !    A MAJOR reason why all the hotels/rooms were 'fully booked'  !!!

i wanted to spend a week on the island, but was unable to book more than a day or two, in any one place.    Moving every day or every couple of days is a pain in the ass.   It eventually came together after i adjusted my dates slightly, and i found a place called Hamilica that had 6 nights in a row … leaving only the first night to stay somewhere else.   It wasn’t until 9pm the night before i left that i got confirmation at the Royal Cliffs Resort.

Travel to Siquijor Island is by Ferry.   Leaving from the port in Tagbilaran (where i arrived),  2 hours by Ferry to Dumaguete, on the Island of Negros, then another hour to Siquijor.    Here is a map so you can see where i traveled.

You get assigned seats on the Ferry, thankfully.   It’s a zoo even with that; lots and lots of loud Chinese... they travel in huge groups!    When i arrived at my seat there was a young girl sitting in it.   We had a bit of confrontation, and then she realized she had the wrong seat and sat next to me.   Then i felt the Catholic Guilt and apologized since we were going to be sitting next to each other for several hours.   She is a 20 yr old, from Sweden, traveling ALONE!    See, i’m not the only one  :)     We had a lot of good conversation and planned to take an island tour together.

Arriving at Royal Cliffs to check in around 1pm, i was told that the ‘other people’ decided to stay another night, and so my room was not available.    But, their ‘sister hotel’, Belle’s, right down the road had a room for me.     It was further than i expected, but the room was good and had A/C and hot water, and was cheaper !

and i liked that it had wide open spaces that looked out right on to the sea.

Low tide with all the fishing boats in for the night

i walked back down to Royal Cliff for cocktails.   and i saw ‘Samuel’ a guy that Greg and i dove with the first day here.   He recommended Siquijor to me .. and there he appeared!   LOVE running into people that i've met along the way... funny when you see them again, you hug and laugh, like you've been best friends forever  :)

i hurried back to Belle's to see the sunset and missed it ... this is the lingering cloud-show with a fisherman finishing his day

Then back down to Royal Cliff for dinner, since they had great reviews.    The food was excellent, as advertised, then back to my ‘sister hotel’.

In the morning i woke up early .. WoW ... 1 February already !
I watched the early morning fishermen already coming in from their morning work

Then walked down the street through San Juan 'village', nothing more than a cluster of hotels, restaurants, and little Sari-Sari 'stores'  (offering just a few items, sometimes you have to look through a wire cage to see them)  along the road; nice and quiet, i liked it !

Speaking of Chinese New Year …
I saw this sign posted proudly along the road this morning.   i am not sure the significance of the 'Original Italian Pasta and Pizza'    ???

Here is one of the fishermen selling his catch ... she picked through all those fishes with her 'gooey' hands, weighed them, and paid him.  She wiped her hands on some leaves to clean them off.

...while i held her kitten that she found new born without a mother, and had been nursing ... this kitty only had a stub of a tail.    When i asked her about it, she said 'in-bred' .... i think meaning that it was born that way ... and i have seen quite a few kitties with just little stubs of a tail.    I was relieved to hear that it had not been cut off !
My first 'Cat-Fix'

Most of the stores are just small; but down the road further, into more of the 'village', i found a larger store.    With lots of EVERYTHING, and lots of choices of everything !     So much inventory that they don't have room for it on the shelves, and i am pretty certain that this is not just a temporary thing ... this is the way it stays.    I found my peanut butter... not easy to find here !    I think people take good care of their dogs here ... this store smelled like 'wet dog' ... obviously it gets to sleep inside the shop, and not out on/in the street  :)

I satisifed my curiosity and headed back to Belle’s and into the water right out front, for my first snorkel experience on Siquijor.   i was not impressed because of the lack of fishes; but i did see this giant, 7 foot long Sea Cucumber.... those are rather large rocks he is sprawled over !

they use these tentacles at the end, searching for food

i saw another Sea Snake, (i will spare you the photo) .... and this BEAUTIFUL, very colorful, but funny-lobster-looking-thing ….

i would not have known what it was if Greg had not told me about them, and we watched a YouTube video.     I encourage you to watch it, i love this guy's voice and his sense of humor, it's quite entertaining, 4min long and captivating:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5FEj9U-CJM

It is a Peacock Mantis Shrimp.   Some info for you, ...but you will learn more with the video !
Arguably one of the most captivating creatures in the sea.  Its hard-shelled body is bursting with color: hues of bright red, green, orange and blue, and its forearms are covered in spots.  At the top of its head rests a set of protruding eyes, and they aren’t just for show.
They have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, with 16 color-receptive cones (humans, have three), it can detect ten times more color than a human, including ultraviolet light.   It can move each eye independently and uses this exceptional eyesight to avoid predators and track down prey.
It lives in the crevices of coral/rocks.  Territorial, it's been known to exhibit aggressive behavior toward intruders.   It has club-like appendages that fold beneath its body, resembling a praying mantis.

With a spring-like punch, it uses these appendages to attack prey—it has the ability to strike at the speed of a .22 caliber bullet (50 times faster than the blink of an eye), a blow from a mantis shrimp can easily break through the shell of a crab or mollusk.   WoW … what a creature…and i saw it  :)

As i was coming into the shallows, i spotted this pretty multi-orange creature, moving very slowly across the sand.   It had 2 horns, or eyes...i don’t know, more research is needed.     At first, the back of it was covered with flower-like frills … then maybe since i disturbed it, they disappeared.

Update:  I've since learned it is a Spanish Dancer, a Nudibrach, a kind of snail without a shell.

It was noon and by the time i got ‘cleaned up’, i could check into my new home, Hambilica, for the next 6 nights.    Ironically, it was only  100 feet down the road !  Hambilica sounded like a cool place, boasting of snorkeling right out front, (big draw obviously), a FireFly Hatchery, Bird Sanctuary, Sunsets, private room w/bath, WiFi, and free Continental breakfast.    Owned and run by Fides, an ambitious Philippino woman, who was educated in the USA as a Montesorri Teacher and a lawyer.    She bought this property, which was a dump, and over 10 years has done an incredible amount of work, with lots of stone walkways and walls and beautiful gardens.    Lots of Orchids

a flowering Philippino bush  :)

i kept forgetting to ask Fides what this is called ... it was very cool, climbing up some of the trees

i was a bit disappointed because 3 years ago the government decided to excavate HER property and destroyed most of the FireFly population and habitat.     But she did show us a FEW Salt-Water FireFly Larvae, which also glow like our FireFlies.     It also affected her bird population.   And you could not see the Sunset, at least at this time of the year, unless it was low tide and you could walk across to the other side of the excavation.

As i was settling into my new home, i heard a woman ask Fides where was a good place to eat.   Since i had a great meal the night before, i poked my head out the door and offered my 2 cents.    The woman who had also just arrived was traveling alone and more in my ‘age-range’  :)    Her name is Kim, from California, and has done extensive travel throughout the world.    Just what i needed… a Buddy — YEAH !

Kim and i walked down the road to find a place to eat.   San Juan is one of the little ‘communities’ along the West coast of Siquijor.   As i was searching for a place to stay, i knew i wanted to be on the West side, but not sure where, since there are several small communities with hotels and restaurants (again, using those terms loosely) along the way.

We stopped at BaJa Bar and Restaurant which advertised an acoustical entertainer, it was very large and very busy.   We found out why once we got in there … half price drinks tonight  :)    There were no tables, we put our name on an 'invisible list' and luckily got a few chairs at the bar.   Kim is a Rum and Coke kinda girl too :)   We waited for 45min and then asked about our table, ...1.5 hr more.   We were able to eat at the bar  :)     We shared a Tuna Ceviche and each had a Tuna encrusted entre … surprisingly, both VERY good  :)

We got along very well and we were both happy to have someone to eat with and do things with.   She was staying one day longer than me; so we were looking forward to a fun week.   She is very interesting and willing to share her knowledge of places she has stayed.   oh, did i mention she is an AVID snorkeler as well !     How perfect is that !

It was another good day and night.
Happy to be on Siquijor ... quieter than Panglao

Alona Beach--Stress Reliever

I have STILL been attempting to organize/finalize a trip to the Island of Siquijor.   I've spent so many hours waiting for the WiFi to send and receive my emails and get responses from places to stay that i was about to scream !     i had confirmation for 6 nights and i planned on leaving the next day, with or without a place to sleep the first night.
i needed to do something to relax … even though it was late in the afternoon, and knew i would be packing wet clothes to leave the next morning … i headed for the beach.

Ahhhhh, amazing what that water and those fish do for my soul !

I've seen these a few times since i've been here... i thought some type of exotic Sea Urchin ?    i actually thought it looked like a Crown of Thorns .... and i find out now, that it is actually a Sea Star, a Crown of Thorns StarFish !    It has between 7 and 23 'arms' ... and VERY DESTRUCTIVE.      It attaches itself to the coral and sucks the life out of it.   They are having a real problem with them in Australia too.   If you try to break it apart, it will just multiply.   So they now have a syringe that they inject 'something' into it that kills it.
At low densities it is a 'normal' part of the reef, however, when their numbers increase dramatically it results in a major disturbance to the balance.   It consumes coral much faster than the coral can grow.    There are several theories for the increase; mostly 'human' related:   --overfishing of the species that prey on the StarFish, --there is a Triton Snail that is prized for it's shell, --agricultural runoff provides nutrients into the ocean providing more food for the Starfish.    Very pretty, growing to 3 feet in diameter, i forgot to mention ... extremely VENEMOUS !

These are TwoTone DartFish … they hang out in pairs, along the sandy bottom.    i spent a lot of time diving down to try to take the photos and this is the best i could do.

They have very large dorsel and anal fins compared to their size, and even have an extra dorsel fin  in the front.

They are about 5 inches long and they are so pretty with their pastel coloring

This is a WireNet FileFish … strange name …. but it looks a lot like an Orange Spotted FileFish that lives in Honduras ... they must be cousins   :)      Notice, he has his ‘party’ hat on !

i was following this Cigar Wrasse, long and skinny like a cigar :)    .
..but look who is also in the photo, to the left … the White Eyed Eel …. i never saw him until i was right on top of them !

Looking around and relaxing out in the deeper water …. i see a pretty Pink JellyFish … it’s about the size of a softball …

Info on Jelly Fish:
First, they are not a fish !    They are invertebrates (animals without backbones).    Jellyfish is a common term used to describe animals that are gelatinous or made up of ‘jelly-like’ material.    They have drifted along on ocean currents for millions of years, even before dinosaurs lived on the Earth. They have tiny stinging cells in their tentacles to stun or paralyze their prey before they eat them. Inside their bell-shaped body is an opening that is its mouth. They eat and discard waste from this opening.   As jellyfish squirt water from their mouths they are propelled forward.

i followed and watched it for quite awhile … here is a video ... also can be seen on YouTube ...

i’ve posted a photo of a Japanese SurgeonFish with a white patch on it’s jaw … this one is very similar, but with a white patch under it’s eye … but it’s called a White Cheeked SurgeonFish.    The Japanese SurgeonFish is actually prettier with brighter yellow and some red too

i was following this Cigar Wrasse … and look who is also in the photo … the White Eyed Eel …. i never saw him until i was right on top of them !

As i returned to the shallows on my way in …. i noticed all these ‘arms’ extending from underneath the rocks … what?  … has to be a type of StarFish.   Reminded me of a Reticulated StarFish that i saw in Florida ….. perhaps it’s cousin …

Looks like these guys have 5 arms

How about another Anemone Fish aka Clown Fish.    I mentioned before, there are many different kinds of ClownFish, who knew?    This is an Orange ClownFish … there is one very similar called a Skunk ClownFish, but from what i can see from my photos, i think this is the Orange ClownFish…. anyone can debate this with me, until i find another one  :)

Here are a couple photos of a pretty DamselFish ... similar to one i posted earlier, but it has more markings and is a 'different fish' ... a Black Axil Chromis

That was a perfect way to end a stressful day ....
Now, lots of packing and organizing to do.... what do i REALLY need to take with me for a week   :)

Dumaluna Beach Snorkel

My first day back from Balicasag Island i spent walking around from restaurant to restaurant trying to find internet.   The power was out, so they said, and it was not working anywhere.   i stopped at the Dive Shop, researched and found names of the new fishes i met at Balicasag.

I spent most of the NEXT morning at the Tip Top restaurant using their internet, trying to organize my next adventure to the Island of Siquijor, i was unsuccessful.    Back home i got ready, and then took one of those little tricycle-taxi inventions to a beach down the road a ways call Dumaluna.

After paying my 50cent entry fee, i looked around.   Nice little constructed spaces you can rent for your group, and open seating also.  Quite nice actually

It was sunny  :)    The beach was beautiful, white sand, and expansive; and not too many people.   Although this photo reminds me of an ice skating rink — i must be thinking of Michigan.

I got into the water.   There was a resort next door, so i snorkeled the other way.   That was a mistake.    The white sand beach goes out a long way, so it takes 5-8min to get into any deep water that may have some life in it.   i was amazed at how much seaweed there was, not a healthy looking reef !     Even in deeper water, looking and looking, and not seeing much of anything.  Is this going to be my first snorkel 'failure' here   :(      I kept thinking, i am really missing Balicasag Island… did i already see the ‘best’, am i going to be disappointed, or even ‘skunked’ the rest of my trip  :(

Then i see it … a black and white striped Sea Snake !    Yes, i knew there were Sea Snakes in some of the waters here, and they are venemous; but like other creatures that we may be afraid of, 'they are more afraid of us than we are of them'.   i keep telling myself.   i was in deep water and it was 10 feet below me, i felt quite safe …. then he started swimming up, towards the surface …. yikes !

i gave him plenty of space as i watched him surface for air, (they do have to breath air) spend a few seconds there, and then return back to his feeding …. paying me no attention at all.    Always difficult to estimate size, but it was at least 7 feet long  :)

Well, that was exciting and a great reminder that i need to look where i am going before i dive down and poke my head around some coral.   Kind of like looking for poison ivy before walking into a field looking for Monarch eggs   :)

i did spot this purple-blue Chocolate Chip Sea Star... among the seaweed.     It wasn’t until i saw the photo, that i noticed there is a ReefTop PipeFish to the left, almost on top of it.   Amazing what you DON’T see when you are focused on something else … good lesson for life too, i guess

I continued to snorkel, looking for something, and being discouraged and amazed at all the seaweed and lack of fishes.   I’d already been in the water almost an hour!   There was a dive boat anchored near buy, so i swam up to it and asked the guys, ‘hi, where is the good snorkeling?’  …. he kind of laughed and pointed a long way in the direction i had just come from, ....in front of the resort  :(      He kindly suggested i swim back into shore and walk the beach back.   Yes, good idea, it would have taken me an hour+ to get back there in the water, against the current!

ok, wading back into deeper waters again, still seeing a lot of seaweed … but finally, out by more boats, i began to see some coral and some fishes … happy i am !

This is a little Mimic FileFish that caught my eye as i was chasing around another fish… very small, and darting in and out of the coral …

And, i saw 3 more Sea Snakes … one of them Blue and Black, instead of Black and White

it seems strange to me that their tails are not ‘pointy’ … but i guess a flat tail makes a better rudder for swimming in the water !

i thought this photo was interesting ... look at the shadow that the snake is making ....   :)
and that's all the Sea Snake photos i will post today .... i know some of you have already probably stopped looking  :(

Back to the pretty fishes  :)
i did a lot of chasing around and diving down, without much success of getting really nice photos.   Good enough for identification, but not that clear.   You’ll have to bare with me until i can get better ones   :)

SweetLips …  love that name !      I've seen this one before; but they are always on the move.   I am hoping that at some point i can get a photo of their 'lips' to see just what earned them their name.   This is an Oriental SweetLips

and the cousin which i just met today for the first time ... the Striped Sweet Lips, not quite as striking

Another unwilling subject ...Black and white dots … with a yellow tail and a pinkish nose … haha … looks like something i would paint on my pottery !   Great looking, striking fish …. it's a White Spotted Wrasse

This is a Map Puffer …. a very FAT one !   He must like to eat SeaWeed, because there sure is a lot of it here.

he has a ‘pig’ nose too  :)
and yes, i looked carefully before i dove down and stuck my head in this hole !

This is another Sea Cucumber … most certainly should be called the ‘Cat’s Paw’

Even more to the point, i took this very short video of it because, as it feeds, it moves it's mouth parts much like a contented cat 'needing'   ... those of you with cats will know what i mean.
You can click on  'YouTube' at the bottom of the video and watch it on YouTube also

And the ‘Strangest Fish Award’ today, goes to these guys.    i was chasing SweetLips when i was distracted by these fishes that were floating along … VERTICALLY !    …  they are called RazorFish

And, they look like someone ate the end of their tails off  !  …   what a strange fish !

My tricycle driver agreed to come back and pick me up at 3pm, so it was time to head back into shore.    In the very shallow, sandy, rubble, with some SeaWeed here and there, i barely noticed this fish, and only because i was in 2 feet of water and eye ball to eye ball with it.
This is a Bristle Tailed FileFish.   He not only has 'bristles' on his tail, he has them on his entire body !     FileFish typically have a little 'party hat' that they can 'put on', or lay it flat so you can't see it .... he was obviously in a party mood    !

What a master at disguise, not only the way it looked, but the way it moved.   Exactly in sync with the wave action of the SeaWeed … sometime swimming upside down …  i didn't just happen to catch him in this position, he was just floating like this

It was awesome to watch ...  and obviously very easy to photograph since it was barely moving.    It looked like he has the ability to pick up sand and wear it as well !

i chose photos so that you could see what it looks like ... i'd also like you to see how well he is camouflaged ... i had a hard time finding it in the photos i took … i mean, can you find it in here ?   ...difficult !

Not a lot to show for today, but definitely not 'skunked'.   Sea Snakes, vertical-swimming RazorFish, a Puffer, and a couple new FileFish.   i have to understand that the more time i spend in the water, the harder it will be to meet ‘new’ fishes, but that won’t stop me from trying  :)

When i got out of the water, i went to retrieve my bag that i left at a counter with some girls that worked there.    i put some money on the counter as a ‘thank you’ and they gave it back to me… now that’s a first !      This a public beach in the Philippines, not a ‘resort’, and i wouldn’t expect a lot of amenities.   but i asked, rather sheepishly and foolishly, if there were any fresh water showers.   Yes, of course, ‘over there to the left’  …. sure enough, fully enclosed toilets and showers, free.... or included with the 50cent entrance fee  !

My tricycle driver was not there at 3pm as promised.   Luckily there were other drivers there looking for customers, so by 3:15 i left with one of them.   You snooze, you loose, right ?    And we didn’t pass him on the way back either.

It was a beautiful sunny day with calm waters … a good day !
