20-23 Feb - From Belize to new Home in Honduras

20-23 Feb - From Belize to new Home in Honduras

6am .... saying goodbye to Madi .... until we met again

we had some rather cool, windy, rainy weather for a few days leading up to my departure date ..... i wasn't sure if the boat would be cancelled,... and the morning didn't look very good either ... it was REALLY windy  .... they said they thought about cancelling, but then decided the wind was going to 'die down'

..... i'm not sure if the wind 'died down' ...  but the seas did NOT ....they were 'angry'...
dock in Dangriga, Belize where we stopped to clear Immigration ...

most of the 5hr trip is inside the reef, but 1.5hr is on the open seas ... and the open seas had HUGE waves on them ... 15' the Capt said .... again, i am happy that i don't get seasick; but it was a little scary .... i just assumed the Capt knew what he was doing ....  we were already out there, and there was no going back ... and nothing i could do about it ... i took a few short naps, in between sliding off the bench when the boat road a big wave ... and we finally arrived in Puerto Cortes   :)     ....it took us over 6+hrs because we had to go much slower over the open sea ...

Puerto Cortes is the red dot just below 'Gulf of Honduras'  ... even though the name is off to the left   :)     and Utila is the small island just below the word 'Roatan' ...

we arrived at Puerto Cortes with the usual mayhem ... guys with hands full of money wanting to exchange your Belize$ for Hondurian Lempira ... i had looked up the rate: 10L to 1B$   ...he offered me 8 ... i argued ... we finally agreed on 9 ... not sure if i got a fair exchange rate, but i felt good i didn't take the 8  :)

then there is the guy that comes around with a bag and wants your Passport ... this made me extremely nervous last year ... but it seems to be the norm ...

another boat w/20 people arrived before us and they were all waiting in line for Immigration .... and it was taking FOREVER .... 2hrs to be exact, before we were finally done with that.    Honduras has a new 'system' ... you sit down, they ask questions, fingerprint 4 fingers on both hands, and both thumbs ... and take a photo ..... all of the criminals are already living in Honduras, why are they bothering with the tourists !!!!!!!!!!!

i met a woman on the boat, who spoke no English, that was going to San Pedro Sula.    we agreed to share a taxi to get there... (i later found a guy who spoke Spanish and i confirmed this) .... while we were waiting our 'turn' she said that her nephew, Edgar, was going to pick her up and i could go with them, and he could drop me off at my Hostel... i could give him $5 ..... what a deal  :)   .... he got caught in 'rush hour' traffic and was another 1/2hr after we cleared immigration; but he arrived!    ....he spoke some English and i asked him if he knew a 'reputable' taxi driver that would actually show up at 4am to take me to the bus station in the morning ... he said HE would do it ... !!!!!!!!    ... i needed to get on the first bus to LaCeiba in order to catch the 9am Ferry to Utila.

when we got to my Hostel we finalized plans ... and i checked in ... i stayed here last year ... the woman is very nice and speaks English  :)  ..... i had sent her an email telling her i was coming, and that i had been there last year when the blue-eyed puppy was there .... this was him then ....

he's a BIG boy now ..... and so sweet ...  still has those blue eyes !

i fixed myself some noodles and went to bed; got up at 3:30am .... and Edgar arrived around 4:20 ... bus leaves at 4:30 ... it was a quick trip to the bus station and he carried my bag all the way through the bus station to the bus ... thankfully, because it's a HUGE 'mall' and it would have taken me awhile to find where i was supposed to go.   he charged me US$10 ... on the way there i asked him if he lived close .... he said he lived about 30min away .... so here is a young guy, who is willing to get up at 'o-dark-30' and drive 30min to pick me up and drive me 10min to the airport ... for US$10 ????????    .....so thankful !

the bus line is Cotuk, and it was a 'direct' bus .... but that doesn't mean it doesn't stop along the way .... probably 15 times in 3hrs ... not too bad ... and i arrived at  LaCeiba at 8am ... plenty of time to take a taxi to the Ferry Terminal for the 9am boat to Utila.

when i arrived at the Ferry i learned that the Ferry had been cancelled the last 2 days because of High Seas !  ....yeah, i know what they mean!    ...but that means that all those people had to spend 1-2 nights in LaCeiba .... i wouldn't have been happy about that, but not much you can do, other than fly $$$$.    ....after 2 days, needless to say the Ferry was packed and the Cargo to go out to the Island was never ending..... they just kept loading, loading, and loading !

we didn't leave until almost 10am, and the Ferry 'rolled' at bit with the waves, but nothing like yesterday!   ...i had sent an email to Caribbean Dreams where i stayed w/last year, but hadn't heard back... also sent an email to a guy who matched renters with apts ... and he met me at the Dock.   he only had 1 place to offer me, and i wasn't that excited about it, and asked to rent by the week, in case i could get back in at Caribbean Dreams.  he didn't think they would do that .... so i went down the street and back to Utila Hotel where i've stayed 4 other times .... i like Annie and Annie who own it, they keep making improvements, and it's a nice place,  .....but it is right on the street, and right next to a 'screaming-kid-park' and they are still doing construction  :(    ...  i can't stay there permanently; but got settled into my room and tried to send a couple emails .... my MacMail was working fine last night; but this morning, i can't send emails AGAIN !

i walked to Caribbean Dreams, but she was gone .... i picked up a few things and went back and got on the phone with TDS  ....1.5hr AGAIN and no results   ...grrrrrrrrrr

then i walked around and asked about apartments to rent ... not much to pick from ... every place is filled up  :(    ...i've not had this problem here before.... i guess Utila was on International HouseHunters or some TV program ... now everyone wants to come here  :(    ...i did find one that i think will work ... it is way up the hill .... away from the street noise ... it should be quiet up there ...

i spent another 2hrs on the phone with TDS ... i kept asking for my hero 'John' ... but they said it was not allowed to transfer me ... WTF !      ...they told me that i would have to delete all my emails and folders, and then they could solve the problem ..... i told them i couldn't that and then spent the rest of the afternoon and night trying to figure out a way to move everything 'somewhere' so i could move it back again ... no luck there either :(

Sun morning the internet connection was poor, so i went to a restaurant, ordered an omlette, and got on the phone again with TDS ... talked to 5 different techs ....and 'Supervisors' .... each time i called, i got someone new, ... i had to tell the whole story, and then they had to 'see if they could make it work' .... they finally told me i should call Apple   ...

i had Apple on the line and we got disconnected twice ...... but finally got a Supervisor who set up a Yahoo email Account for me on my Mac Mail .... since it worked fine through Yahoo....... he said to tell TDS that it is not an Apple problem  ... so at least i could 'send' emails through a yahoo email address ...

i called TDS back again, and they continued to disagree with me ... and ... told me that the new system will only allow me to send 5 'international' emails in an hour, ... and no more than 50 per day  !    WTF again !     ....so much for my Blog !     ...but i have my Yahoo Account, so i didn't care anymore.   ....

so ... if you get mail from 'dpieracini@yahoo.com'  ... it's me  :)

that was 3hrs Sunday morning ... by the time i got back to the 'apartment people' ... they had already rented the apartment to someone else  :(      but ... there are 5 Sisters who own these buildings and one of the other sisters had an apartment for me .... the other one had hot water, this one did not .... but i didn't care.   i said i'd take it ....  back down to Hotel Utila and said good-bye to Annie and Annie and thanked them for 'being there' ...

so .........  this is my new 'home' for a couple of weeks ..... it's like being out at Sherman Lake .... it's a long walk to anywhere .... but it's quiet ... except for the kids who come around in the evening and scream and play right in front of my door  :(

it's called CountrySide Apartments ... street view

my building ... 2 'apartments' .. i'm on the left ...

walking in the door ...

i don't know what that 'black box' is hanging from the ceiling  :)

kitchen ...  with a freezer that keeps ice frozen  :)

shower on right ...

it is really hot here and no breeze ... the fan in my room makes a lot of noise, but doesn't provide any 'wind'  ...  :(    ...but not complaining ... just stating the facts  :)

so here i am for a couple of weeks ... :)

12-19 Feb -- Back at Caye Caulker

12-19 Feb -- Back at Caye Caulker

trying to decide when i wanted to leave ... i've been here longer this year than ever before ... and i am so comfortable, it's hard to leave ... especially when i know how noisy and busy Utila will be .... but i feel like i need to move on ...
the boat from Belize City to Puerto Cortes, Honduras only goes on Fridays ...so that narrows it down a bit ... but which Friday?  ....   getting back from Half Moon Caye on Wed, ...and leaving in 2 days was out of the question.
so i guess i'll just enjoy this week, and look at the next Fri, 20 Feb ... maybe ....

you know the 3 lies of an island   :)
--i'll never drink again
--i love you
--i'm leaving tomorrow

in between a few little projects ... i did some 'fun' stuff .....i spent some time around the Mangroves at Madi's hoping to see a SeaHorse .... i am standing in water ankle to knee deep, trying not to disturb the sediment .....
i saw this little Checkered Puffer Fish with the Orange eyes ....  all i can do is put the camera underwater and hope for the best ...

also saw this little Yellow Stingray, this one was only about 8-10 inches around  (grow up to 14") ... but you still do not want to step on them ....

Laura came out, taking Peaches for a swim ...

then i spotted the little Yellow SeaHorse ...  these are the most amazing creatures ....

it was a good day to wade in the water ....

a few days before that i spotted the brown SeaHorse ...

we had a beautiful SunSet for Valentines Day  ...

Jill, the Yoga Instructor from Half Moon Caye was going to be spending a few days on Caye Caulker before returning to the USA.     we made plans to meet for a drink one evening .... and she came over the next day and we did a bike and tour ...

we went out to the Airport and turned down a road and followed it all the way to the end ... and found the ReCycle Plant that they are building ... it's HUGE ... and on prime property right on the water ! .... i had heard they were building one, which made me happy; and i was even happier that it was this far along ...

we rode through an area where some new homes were being built painted real bright colors; and then came across these Egrets and a stray Roseate SpoonBill .... looked rather strange there with them .... Madi had been there a few days ago, and told me she saw a Flamingo ... i forgot to tell her what it really was ...

we rode a long way out to the SouthWest shore, across the Runway for the airport and looked at some other new homes that are being built out there .... then made a complete circle and ended up back at the Airport.    it was fun exploring

the night before i went out to Half Moon Caye, i met a girl when i stopped at the bar to listen to the music. Jill and i saw her and she invited us to meet up at a small bar, Oasi, that evening ... they were having a Cuban guy playing the guitar.      so after eating dinner at Wish Willy's, we went there ...   the guy was awesome.   it was a small place with 'older' people  :)   ....really nice.    it's fun to get out and meet (local--not transient) people.... something i've never done while staying at Madi's .... i need to do it more  :)

Laura and i went snorkeling at The Split one hot afternoon .... we tried to take some 'underwater selfies' ....

she didn't snorkel for very long ... but i did, ... despite not seeing much ... but you know me ... "i'm happiest when i'm in the sea" .... even if i'm not seeing much ....

but i did see 3 Cushion Sea Stars, and a LionFish  ...

oh, and i saw a Spotted Eagle Ray jump out of the water ... but it was kinda far away .....  i kept watching under the water for him to come swimming down the channel, but never saw him ....

i took more photos of some of the kitties, after they had eaten their breakfast ... doing what kitties do .... lay around and sleep !

Garfield ....

i also spent a lot of time on the phone with my phone/internet provider back in the USA ... TDS ...... they just 'reconfigured' their email system, and i could not get my MacMail to work .... AT ALL !    ...on 13 Feb i spent 3 hrs with 3 different 'support techs' .....luckily i can use Skype to call their toll-free number ... i don't know what i would have done without Skype!  ...but between the internet connection and Skype connection ... most of the time, i couldn't hear them and they couldn't hear me ... repeating, repeating, repeating ... those guys were REALLY patient given the circumstances.... more patient than i was.     finally i was able to 'receive' emails .... but still could not 'send'.        ...and i was done for the day ... i couldn't do it any more :(

.... on 14 Feb i spent 1.5hrs with 'genius trouble-shooter' named John, and he was able to get it working for me .... he was quite proud of himself, as he should be ... he said, 'i think i earned my pay for today'  .... i was so thankful and sent a note to TDS about him.

on Wed, i finally made my decision to leave on Fri ... reluctantly .... Laura is sad to have me leave, and i have really enjoyed her .... she calls me her 'Mum'   ... :)

the night before i was leaving i found out that Fran, a friend from Kalamazoo, was here on Caye Caulker.   Fran has been coming here for years ... way before me .... but i'm usually gone by the time she arrives ... so i ran down to her place and we shared a drink on Caye Caulker 'sand'  ...  again, sorry to be leaving when there are people here i can do 'things' with  :(

i love Caye Caulker  :

11 Feb - Leaving Half Moon Caye :(

11 Feb -- Leaving Half Moon Caye    :(

some info on Half Moon Caye:
--1981 Belize got it's independence from Britian, no longer British Honduras
--1982 it created the first reserve under the National Parks System Act of 1981
--4 Mar 1982 Half Moon Caye was declared a Natural monument
--the protection of the Red Footed Booby Community was the primary reason
--1961 hurricane Hattie decimated HMC including the Booby Rookery
--the very first LightHouse was built in 1820, with bricks from Europe
--in 1930 present steel framed tower was added to brick base completed in 1948 .... --the Lighthouse is solar powered, and once stood in the middle of the Caye ... but is now on the shore
--there are 4,000 Red Footed Booby Birds living there now

The Belize Audubon Society manages Half Moon Caye now ... it was formed in 1969, and is interested in ALL aspects of Belizian natural heritage, and dedicated to the preservation of wildlife and natural resources.

Yoga again this morning .... shavasana, island style  ...  :)

then off to snorkel with a group from Island Expeditions .... i do really prefer to snorkel by myself  ....
we headed back to the same spot i went yesterday, ...Todd didn't think the current would be as bad ... but it was ... we continued and finally got through it (probably 15min)  .... and got out to Coral Gardens; but by then we were 'out of time'   ... i should have just stayed out there by myself, but i didn't   :(

there were a lot of patch reefs and lots of fishes ... but not really time to take many photos ...   this is a DamselFish

...looking at me  ... :)

a Squirrel Fish ... with big eyes to see you with  :)

and a Spotted TrunkFish...

i think this Anemone just had a Manicure  :)

when i got back to the cabins, Cliff was there looking through binoculars, he said he saw Aqua Scuba ... :(   ...time for me to pack .... if they didn't come today i would have been happy to stay, but .... go i will  :(

as i was cleaning up ... i saw this big bucket of SeaWeed that a guy was 'cleaning'  .... he was going to make a SeaWeed drink.     Laura had some on Caye Caulker and said it was really good ... but this batch has to 'ferment'... so i'll have to continue to look for it elsewhere ...

i said my 'goodbyes' and thanked everyone for their exceptional hospitality.   i made sure i didn't leave anything behind, and got on the boat ....

the Divers did The Aquarium, and Damian and i snorkeled above it.
you can see the drop off to the 'wall' here ...

it was not a really good snorkel spot for me ... anything you wanted to see was pretty deep  :(    .... i dove down a couple of times and took a few photos ...

there sure is pretty coral down here, ... out of 'harms-way'  aka 'humans' ...

we did see a Spotted Eagle Ray in the distance ....

and i got another look at the prettiest fish .... the Queen TriggerFish ...

the ride home was pretty smooth ... we went right to San Pedro and then took the Water Taxi back to Caye Caulker....

i returned 'home' to find lots of new people, ..... and another girl in 'MY' bed  :(

my little friend, Laura, was happy to see me and gave me a big hug  :)

i vow to return to my paradise someday  :)

10 Feb--Day 4 Half Moon Caye

10 Feb--Day 4 Half Moon Caye

i woke up to 'howling' winds ... it sounded like a hurricane ... as calm as it was yesterday .... this took me by surprise.   i have wooden shutters on my windows, and the whistling that came through them was scary .... but when i looked outside, it was windy, but not as windy as it sounded, and it was sunny  :)

i went to 6:30 Yoga again  ... nice people ....  since it was so windy, there were 'white-caps' on the waves ... and it looked like the tide was out ... i decided to take a walk around the island .... i wanted to know how long it would take me ... so, you'll get a tour of the perimeter of the island ...

here is a good photo of it from the air .... i started at about "3 o'clock" ,,,

i started here at the hammocks at Island Expeditions at about 9am

it was a rough very slow walk, over old broken pieces of coral ... i had to plan my steps, i didn't want a twisted or broken ankle ...   this is not a black and white photo ... just an old Brain Coral, proof that at one time, this island was underwater ...

after 15min i arrived at the West Beach ... my favorite snorkel spot  :)

i walked through the trees and down the path

and passed Octopus Garden snorkel spot

and arrived at our Dock at 9:37

this is the far East end of the island ... kinda barren out here ...

this is the old LightHouse (part of it in the water) ... the sand in this area was really deep and i sunk into the sand up to my ankles .... again ... very slow walking  :)

and back at the hammocks at 10:00

.... that's an hour ... i asked one of the guys how long it took ... he said 25min ..... he must have walked the length of the island, on the path ... or else he can fly  :)

a little bit of lunch then off to snorkel in the not-so-rough lagoon ....and i started way down by the hammocks ...  i kinda passed through this part rather quickly, i saw ParrotFish

and a few Banded ButterFly Fish ...

i had a plan to go through the channel and around to the front side of the island ... but by the time i got to the channel i was starting to get cold, and the current was really strong ... it was shallow and i was pulling myself along using the rocks on the bottom  ....

i ran into thousands of little tiny fishes ... everywhere ...

then, i was cold and decided to call it quits ... it was a a 'cold'  (i realize that is a relative term)   walk back into the wind   ....

in the evening i went to watch the SunSet again ... with a camera  :)

and watched it MELT into the water over Long Caye...

there were a type of morning glory ... kind of like our Moon Flowers, that open at night ...

pretty, but they were not fragrant   :(

when i got back to the 'camp' .... Pablo and Todd were cleaning fish and had some visitors ...  Nurse Sharks looking for a free meal ... and they got one  ...

Annette, the 'chef' for Island Expeditions caught me this afternoon and invited me to dinner since it was that group's last night .... she insisted ....  :)

they had the tables decorated very nice  ... using coconuts for vases ... the food was delicious and we had some 'drumming' and 'dancing' ....

and the end of another day in paradise ...
