22 Mar - Rudy's Snorkel

22 Mar - Snorkeling from Rudy's

on Sunday i walked to the other end of West End and talked with Michelle ... i stayed at her place (Georphe's) in 2012 ... and had a nice visit ..... then i snorekled out to the reef ...
its' kind of out from 'Eagle Rays' in the photo below ...

it's about a 10min swim to get out there .... and it's across the 'highway' that the water taxis use to go from West End to West Bay ... so that's why i take my float with me ... you can see how nice and calm the water is ...love it this way  :)

this is part of the entire reef system ... so you can snorkel horizontal to the shore, back and forth, always seeing something different ....

i went out to the edge of the reef, in deeper water, and the first fish i saw was this Porcupine Fish, in a hurry to get to safety ...

and this Black Durgeon ...

i don't think i've posted a photo of the 3 Spot DamselFish .... they are only about 1.5" long and are very fast ...

a Banded ButterFly Fish ...

this little Juvenile French AngelFish is pretty quick too ...

this is a Magnificent Feather Duster ... it is actually a 'worm' and if you get close to it ... it disappears inside it's tube ...

i came across this coral head that was home to many different fish ... including a LionFish .... i don't know why they don't just gang up on him and kick him out  ...  :)
several different kinds of ParrotFish, Blue Tang, Blue Striped Grunt, and a SchoolMaster Snapper ...

not to mention the beautiful Queen AngelFish ....

and this curious Smooth TrunkFish ...

look at that cute little mouth  :)

this Spotted TrunkFish wasn't very interested in me ....

moving along i saw another Scrawled FileFish ... not as large as the one yesterday ... but still a master at changing colors to match it's surroundings ....   here it's more brown ...

and now more pink ....   color coordination at it's best ...

these Blue Indigo Hamlets are quick little swimmers too ...

there is some pretty coral out here .... there are many boats that bring Cruise Ship snorkelers out here, but the damage isn't as bad as it is at West Bay ...

a BlueHead Wrasse

and finally the sinister-looking Barracuda ...

i didn't get in the water until after 3pm ... so i was hoping i'd see a Turtle or an Eagle Ray coming in to feed for the evening ... but no luck  :(

21 Mar - Half Moon Bay Snorkeling

21 Mar - Snorkeling Half Moon Bay

on the weekend i snorkeled both days .... Sat right in town at Half Moon Bay ...

my first stop was under the dock on the left side in the photo ... i've always found lots to look at here ... ScorpionFish, Eels, Octopus, and Lobster ... i only found lobsters today .... :(    ...

but i did see several large TrumpetFish ... hanging vertically, along poles or posts ...

they are sleepy-looking characters ...

i saw a very large lobster ...  walking around    .... and trying to climb up into some coral....

but when i looked, there was another lobster in there ....this is their mating season ... so i assume that is the reason why ... the big healthy ones are out looking for a mate ... i did some research on lobsters while i was volunteering on Utila .... fun facts on

Lobsters Mating Habits:
--A lobster’s shell can not grow, it must shed its shell (molt).  After molting the lobster's body is very soft and it can take a few months for its shell to harden again leaving itself open to cannibalism and predation.
--The female also has to molt to mate.   The female will approach the male's den (females make the choice and prefer the biggest male in the neighborhood) and send out pheromones which tells the male she is ready to mate.
--He usually emerges with an aggressive posture—lobsters don’t like company.   She returns his aggression or ignores him, either ploy works, and the male soon settles down and allows her to enter his shelter.
--Once inside, the female molts and leaves herself entirely vulnerable. If the male chose to eat her now, she would have no way to protect herself.   But the male (who retains his shell) carefully cradles her during mating and will protect her afterwards.
--The female stays in the male's den for about a week, just until her new shell has grown and hardened.

this is possibly what is happening in the first part of the video below, ..... a lobster climbing up some coral, and you can see the other lobster in there ...

that's your Lobster Trivia for the day ....

it has been REALLY calm on the waters here ... such a nice change from Utila ... and really calmer than i've seen it here as well ... so i took advantage of the calm seas and ventured out of the Bay around both sides where i'd never snorkeled before because it's usually too rough beyond the protection of the bay.... it was fun exploring ...

so, on outside the Bay on the left side, beyond where you can see in the photo above....

there is another 'can you find the fish' photo .... such a master of camouflage !

it's a large Scrawled FileFish that was feeding and hung around for a long time .... it was difficult to keep track of him with the sunlight coming through the water ....

he was big ....

and didn't mind me getting in real close... there is a little bit of him swimming around in the video too ...

i swam across the channel ...carefully ...to the other side outside the Bay ... i say carefully, because the boats go too fast and are not good at watching... before i got here, 2 people were hit by boats in one week ! ..... that news woke me right up, to be extra vigilant when snorkeling .... the Marine Park is making more and larger bouys to put in the Bay, to try to get boats to slow down ! ....

on the right side, outside of the Bay, i saw a Tiger Grouper ... it's always pretty exciting for me to see a Grouper in Honduras ...

a Caribbean Reef Squid ...

always fun to watch them swim ....  backwards ...  a bit in the video of that too  :)

and another lobster ... they are so colorful ..... NOT red, like when they're dead :(

i watched this one for a long time ....

he was big ... and very active ... a lot of this on the video ...

then i swam back across the channel and watched the 'kids' playing on this sailboat that someone moored in the Bay for them to play on ... they get that boat rocking back and forth to get the best swing ... the boat is just off the dock on the left side; but wasn't there when that photo was taken ... kids, big and small, love it  ... today i was big kids ...

found the old sunken submarine ... with another big lobster crawling over it ...

and then he ran for cover under the submarine and poked his head out ...

this pretty Black Grouper was hanging around the top of the submarine too....

and a Scorpion Fish in the grass ...

some girls showed up and i showed them the Scorpion Fish ... they said they never would have seen it   :)   ...i love doing that  :)

they countered with, 'we just saw a turtle on the other side, over there' ... so i went back across i search of the turtle, but did not see it   :(     ....haven't seen a turtle in Honduras yet  !

the video from today :

17-19 Mar - Beach Patrol-Week 1

17-19 Mar - Beach Patrol-Week 1

i started 'Beach Patrol' this week.   this is one of the things i also did last year for the Roatan Marine Park.    there were 2 cruise ships with 5,122 people on Tues,  ... 3 cruise ships with 9,156 on Wed,  .... and 2 cruise ships with 5,870 on Thurs .... and unfortunately many of the people who visit the beautiful West Bay Beach do not understand, nor does the Cruise Ship bother to inform them, that what they will see in the water is a living organism, ... and not a bunch of rocks to climb on, or stand on so they can take photos of each other  :(

here is a photo of the beach, and you can see all the coral, right on shore.
it is breath-takingly beautiful!

this is good and bad:
'good',  because it is 'so close to shore' ... that you don't have to hire a boat to take you snorkeling ... you can snorkel all day every day for free .. which is why i love it here  ... and ...
'bad',  because it is 'so close to shore'  .... and so easy for uninformed snorkelers to easily destroy the very thing that they come to see!

some don't know, and some don't care ... and some care, but aren't careful, or comfortable in the water, or experienced enough to control what they are doing while they are snorkeling   :(

so i walk the beach with my Roatan Marine Park shirt on, a whistle, and a Fish ID card, ... and talk with people who are getting in the water to snorkel ... they like to look at the pictures of the fish that the will see.

i like to talk with young kids ... oh, did i say that?   .... just briefly though   :)  ... and then i 'deputize' them and tell them that if they see anyone standing on the coral or touching it, they can tell them not to  .... the little ones really like that   :)      ...one little boy said to his friend, 'ok, let's go!'

i meet a lot of very nice people who express their gratitude for what i am doing ... a few don't want to be bothered,  ... but i politely 'insist' that they just give me one minute of their time.    actually, many people think i want to 'sell' them something, since there are lots of people walking the beach selling 'things' ...  so sometimes my opening statement is  ..... 'i am not trying to sell you anything' ... :)

after i walk the beach and wade in the water to talk with people for about 2hrs ... my voice is starting to 'crack' and i need to take a break.   at this point, i get my snorkel gear on, and head into the water.    i feel like a 'stalker' ... snorkeling around and looking underwater for people who are standing on the coral ... and i do see them :(

although i am focused on looking for feet/fins on coral ...  i take a few other photos along the way ...

i know i show a lot of close-up photos of fishes .... but this photo shows just how hard it is sometimes to spot them...do you see the fish in this photo ?

here is a close up of it ... a Smooth TrunkFish ...

the first day, in the shallows ....i saw this big HogFish in it's Terminal Phase....

and the next day saw this one ...  in it's Initial Phase ...

a Queen AngelFish with a Juvenile ParrotFish...

a RedBand ParrotFish

same guy ....smiling for the camera  .... :)

a Rainbow ParrotFish ... they are quite large ...

in the shallows i saw this ... i wasn't really sure what it was ... but i think it is a Shrimp ...

i've only ever seen Banded Coral Shrimp, i've never seen a Shrimp like this before ...  i'll have to work on this one  .... :)

a Queen ParrotFish ... showing me a toothy smile ...

what pretty yellow and blue tails these Ocean SurgeonFish have ....

i usually check back into the Marine Park ... then by the time i get home and everything cleaned and hung on the line, photos downloaded ... i'm pretty much done for the day ....

until i head to SunDowners to watch the SunSet ....   :)
