INVENTORY

i had a nice visit this morning with our resident cat ... i've only seen him one other time, but this time he made himself at home for awhile ...

and i was appreciative ...

i packed up to go to West Bay to do 'beach patrol', but there were no Cruise ships in today :(     ... implement Plan B ...

i went to the RMP Store where they were doing inventory, and helped count the stock, including 409 new RMP t-shirts that just arrived ... all colors and sizes.

Coltin and i have been working on a new sign to put up at the West Bay Beach ...

those are all dead SeaHorses that have been confiscated from little kids selling them on the beach ....  sooooo sad  :(      ....it was hard to drill holes into them to put them on this board ...   :(

we are trying to get the Cruise Ship people NOT to buy them ...  if no one is buying them, hopefully they'll quit killing them  ...

NEW SNORKEL PLACE

spent all morning catching up on my blog .... i've been negligent .... :(

about 12:30 i needed to get in the water ... and i wanted to go somewhere different ... somewhere that most people don't go  ... so maybe the coral won't be so damaged ... i decided to try the Reef in front of Georphi's where i stayed last time ...

... the 'Water Taxi Expressway' between West Bay and West End runs between the shore and the reef, so to get out to the reef, you have to swim through there, and sometimes the boats aren't watching for snorkelers in the water...  when i got home from here last time, i ordered a 'Diver Down' float, bright red, specifically for this purpose.   this is the first time i've needed to use it ...they should be able to see me with this ...

i stopped into Georphi's and asked if i could leave my bag there ... no problem .... got in the water and tied the rope to my float around my waist; and off i went ... it is a long swim, but there is some stuff to look at on the way in the Turtle Grass .... lots of Conch ... dead and some alive ... most dead
very large Conch ... alive  :)
TrumpetFish
it was nice to see healthy Sea Fans here ... :)
Sea Fans

this is that little fish that darts in and out of the coral so quickly ... i finally got a photo of it that isn't blurry :)
YellowTail DamselFish - Juvenile .... before his tail turns yellow

what is this fish saying ?
Sergeant Major
Flamingo Tongue

i think this is a White Grunt, ...besides 'grunt' being a weird name for a fish, it's not all 'white' and has pretty markings on it ...
White Grunt

i love a HogFish with it's long spiky dorsal fin !

4 Eye ButterFly Fish
Orange Spotted FileFish
i love these fishes ...
Orange Spotted FileFish
Caribbean Reef Squid

this is an unusual fish ... it digs a whole in the sand and piles rock/coral around it ... and then stays close ...
TileFish
if you come near it ... it darts into it's home ...it's also kind of unique in that it's a long slender fish and it wiggles it's body kind of like a snake ...
Sand TileFish

i was happy to see this Ocean TriggerFish .... he was cruizing the area where i was snorkeling the whole time i was there ...
Ocean TriggerFish

our path's crossed several times ... it's a pretty big fish ... 1.5 feet ... when it swims, it's top and bottom fins (dorsal and anal) move in opposite directions ... cool !
Ocean TriggerFish

i was in the process of returning to shore when i saw this little brown 'thing' in the water ... i thought it was a leaf until i looked closer ....
Balloon Fish
it was a cute little Balloon Fish ... look at it's little smiley face !
Balloon Fish

they have these great iridescent green eyes !
Balloon Fish w/iridescent eyes
Balloon Fish
when they feel threatened, they can inflate themselves into a 'balloon' .. and then all those little spines stick straight up all over their bodies ...

i saw a snorkel that someone lost laying in the sand ... i picked it up to bring it in, and lots of dirt and sand came pouring out of it ... and then i saw that this little guy was in there too ... so i left the snorkel there ...
 ???  i some kind of a Cardinal Fish ?

in closer to shore, i saw this bright red object ...
Body of an Anemone
and this is what comes out of it ... very cool and pretty !
Anemone, out of it's body
as i was floating into the really shallow water, i saw this tiny little baby Barracuda ... it wasn't more than 2" long ...
Baby Barracuda
that was a fun snorkel .. something different :)

A DRY DAY

i shortened the new dress i bought, and also shortened a dress i brought with me ... will i ever wear either one of them? .... i'm more comfortable in shorts  :(     ...but it took me a long time to do this project, so i'm going to force myself some night ...  :)

in the afternoon i walked to the other end of town to find Suzanne.   i had no way to contact her, but Angie told me where she is living.    she is at Sunset Villas ... and i was anxious to check them out anyway ... VRBO has several of them for rent here ... in case anyone is interested ...  :)

she was at home ... her Villa is 2bedroom, 2bathrooms, and is really large!  ... very nicely decorated and right across from the pool with a waterfall that she can listen too   ... it's nice....   and we had a nice visit and exchanged emails ... my not having a phone here makes things more difficult ...

then home, ...then The Sundowner ... another Monkey LaLa ... this is getting to be a 'good' habit  :)     ...did i tell you that a Monkey LaLa is like a chocolate ice cream drink, but without the ice cream ... but with vodka, Kahlua, and Baileys (or something similar)   :)    ...so when i said it was a 'Dry' day ... i didn't mean no alcohol  :)

i walked down the street wondering where i was going to eat.    i got as far as Monkey Island ... yes, there are a lot of 'monkey themes' here  .... and went in ....

a young guy (his name is Chance) that lives here, works at the restaurant, and Mark, my apartment Manager, was there also ..... he sat with me while i had dinner .... i ordered the whole fish ... a snapper ... it hung off both sides of my plate and tasted wonderful ....best fish i've had here !!!!    ...eating a whole fish always reminds me of my 'fishing days' in Wyoming ... :(

it was Saturday night, and since i stayed home last night, i 'forced myself' to walk through town.   i saw a guy i met a few times before and spent the rest of the evening talking with him.

what?   ... no photos ?

here is one of the entrance to my apartment ...

ok,  a couple more ... of Sunset Villas ...

WEST BAY PATROL

Oscar took Tony and i to West Bay this morning ... on the way we went outside the reef and visited with this old fisherman ... Oscar said he's out here all day, everyday ...in the tiny canoe, fishing ...  he says he catches marlin and other BIG fish from this little boat... that would be way too scary for me !

his catch this morning .... a very large LionFish .. caught at 130feet of water, i think he said ...there are several restaurants that have LionFish on their menus   :)
Large LionFish

there were not very many people at the beach today .... but we managed to keep busy .... in and out of the water ...

i found a group of 6 Caribbean Reef Squid and was able to point them out to about 8 snorkelers who would have never spotted them ...they are difficult to see ...

i also pointed out this TrumpetFish to several people ... it's a good 'ice breaker' to introduce myself and give them our message ...
TrumpetFish

...saw a few other fishes as well
StopLight ParrotFish and YellowTail DamselFish
Queen ParrotFish
Midnight ParrotFish

i was happy to see a Flamingo Tongue ... i saw so many in Utila, but few here ...
Flamingo Tongue

this is probably the same Rainbow ParrotFish i saw the other day ... damn he is ginormous (my new word for gigantic and enormous) ... he makes the Blue Tang look tiny !
Rainbow ParrotFish and Blue Tang

today is Tony's last day of volunteering, so when we got back he was saying his 'goodbyes',  .... i was ready to leave when Nic asked me to help finish up another Recycle Bin .... he did most of the work ... i think i was just 'morale support'   :)

on my way home, i stopped to see the guy that sells seafood from a cooler in the street.  i don't have a very big/good freezer, so i didn't want to buy a whole pound of shrimp ... he obliged and sold me 1/2 pound for dinner tonight  :)

SunDowner then back home and fixed garlic and onion shrimp pasta ... so fresh, and so good :)

Angie, who has been getting me out at night is on Caye Caulker for a week,   so this was not a very exciting 'Friday Night' ... but i was ok with it  ....

SNORKEL PATROL AND WMU

Tony was supposed to go to West Bay today, but had to do other work, ... and the Patrol boat was being repaired, so i took a WaterTaxi by myself ...

the plan was to go for just a couple of hours, because i wanted to get back to watch WMU play Syracuse in the NCAA Championships ... yes, .... me .... leaving snorkeling to watch at basketball game on TV !!!!!!!!   ... ok, i was feeling nostalgic ...

i walked the beach for a bit, and talked to a lot of interested people ... then got in the water .... while you are on 'patrol'  :)  .... you don't pay too much attention to the fishes, since you are looking for people ... but i did take a couple photos ....

School of Blue Tang

Obviously a casualty of 'poaching'

Indigo Hamlet

i spent some time following this Gray AngelFish around .... it's not often they hang around and let you observe them for a long period of time...especially this close ...

Gray AngelFish
i've mentioned this before ... but sometimes you have to see a fish many many times, before you really see all of it ... i was amazed by the Bright Yellow color of it's pectoral fins ... they were beautiful !   ...and the blue on the nose ...

i have to admit, i do not know why they call this a SquirrelFish ... but in this photo, it's obvious to see why they call it 'LongSpined' ...
LongSpined SquirrelFish

it took awhile to get a WaterTaxi back to WestEnd ... they need to have at least 3 people, and there weren't too many people interested in going to WestEnd ... so i got to el Boske later than i had planned.   Walter was there, he recognized me, and changed the station on the TV .... it was almost halftime and WMU was losing badly  :(    ....i had high hopes because i heard that they were down by 17 in their last game and came back to win ... but, sadly, that wasn't going to be the case today  :(     ...there was no volume on the TV, so i didn't hear any commentary ... but you all probably know the story ...

it was Walter's lunch break and he asked if he could join me during halftime.    what a delightful guy ... from the mainland, 19, just out of high school, came to Roatan telling his parents he wanted to work and fund the trip himself, and is returning to go to college to study Marine Biology.   he is not Scuba certified and i want to ask the RMP if they have a program to help the locals.   ...truly a motivated nice handsome young man.

i had the Pork Sandwich today ... and the Coconut Flan ... both very good  :)

on my way home i passed the RMP and, yes, my Navy Guys were there, getting ready to snorkel again ... i asked them about their ship an they confirmed that they will all be split up and reassigned.

The Sundowner for a Monkey LaLa ... they are only US$4 at Happy Hour there ... i paid US$9 at Infinity Bay last weekend !

i ate dinner from one of the 'ladies-on-the-street' ... chicken kabobs, rice, slaw .... US$5 ... not bad ...
